Anyone who has ever experienced the art of trying to make money while being a stay at home mom – and maybe that’s you! – has felt the stress of trying to do two things of great magnitude at the same exact time. Circus jugglers and magicians have nothing on stay at home moms and money juggling. Taking care of kids and finding the time to dedicate to making money is no easy walk in the park. The pressure is real! You want to be there for your kids today and still be able to provide for them tomorrow. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone!
Stay at Home Moms and Money: Making Money
Just like fruit snacks and bathtime routines, money is an important subject in our daily lives. As a busy mamma, I can relate to this quote, “The days are long but the years are short.” When my son was three I would do just about anything to lure him into an afternoon nap. And, that 4:00 p.m. glass of wine couldn’t come fast enough. My oldest is now 14 years old, and I would give anything to hang out with him when he was three again.
Money-wise, the reality is that this precious time as the primary caregiver for growing children does not last that long. The balance between making money and watching our children grow is a challenge, but it is not impossible. We are living in a time of advanced technology and worldwide internet access. Remote work is more available now than it ever was before. As stay at home moms, it is easier to find opportunities that will fit our daily lives with remote work. Remote work opportunities might look like virtual assistant work, data entry, network marketing, graphic design or social media management, bookkeeping, blogging, etc. Reflect on what you like to do and what you are good at doing. Reflect on your priorities and your time commitment, which can shift as a stay-at-home mom.
Here are a few more fabulous ways to make money if you’re not sure where to start:
- Resell. If you’ve got a good eye for what people love, and you happen to have stuff to sell or enjoy shopping for a good deal, you can sell your curated items in online marketplaces. Think Poshmark, Etsy, Ebay, and third party sellers.
- Utilize your crafty skills. If you’ve got a knack, there’s a market for it. Lean in and earn from it! Remember to charge enough to keep the return on investment high. There is a niche (and a buyer) in every corner of the internet. No joke, I have a friend with two kids (check her out at Hot Mesh Mom) who started this and over time, loved it so much she retired from her day job – and so did her husband! One step at a time… but if you love crafts, it can be a great side gig.
- Freelance and gig work. Think about graphic design, copywriting, SEO, social media marketing, and similar work. These skills are highly valuable. Choose something you like, and be sure to keep up with the latest trends by continuing education as you gain experience. Fiverr.com is a great place to look at how other people are creating.
- Passive income with safe investments. Making your money make more money for you while you do other things is one of the most strategic ways to build wealth! But it takes a little planning and education, so you fully understand what you’re doing. I’ve got a high-yield savings account that’s earning me 1.1% per month. It’s better than nothing, and I love seeing it grow!
Keeping your professional skills sharp during your time as a stay-at-home mom can pay off in other ways, too. It’s no secret that women who leave the workforce to care for their children experience a drop not only in income but also in career advancement. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Take your time as a stay at home parent to hone your skills or change career paths – but the key is to keep moving forward for yourself.
